let's get organized!

Hi everyone, it's me, betty, again. This time I have some more business-y things to talk to ya'll about. I've been emailing back and forth with the lovely Prof Me and she I were brainstorming ways to organize this blog. After a few discussions it seems that what would work best is a links list in the side bar that will take you to all the posts related to a particular topic. That of course means that each post needs to get 'tagged' or labeled as belonging to a particular category.

One obvious class of categories is by author. I think it'd be nice to read all of one contributors posts since we all use this blog for various reasons.

The other tags are a little less straightforward. Some ideas we have are: healthy habits, recipes, exercise, and stress.

Prof Me has kindly granted me administrative rights to Active Academic so that I can take the lead on getting things straightened up around here. My knowledge of html and blogs and organizing only go so far but here's what I came up with: I can create a new post for each "category". The post would just contain links to all the actual posts that have content related to that category. Two things need to happen for this to work. First, people need to add some tags at the end of their posts that let us know what categories they belong to. Second, since only an administrator can edit the posts, someone (Me!) would have to go in an manually add the permalinks for each entry into the correct "category" post. Since I no longer have a blog of my own to take care of I think I could acutally handle this and would sort of enjoy it.

What I'd like to do right now is just open the floor to ask people:
  1. Is this is a good idea? Or is there some easier, better way to do this that I don't know about?
  2. Are those of you who post here willing to add tags to your posts? If you don't want me messing around and editing your post itself, you'd have to make the tag be an actual link to the "category" post. I don't think you'd need to add the author tag though, unless you felt like it.
  3. What other categories we should add? I don't want too many because I think that'd defeat the purpose, but I don't want to leave important categories out.
Ok, probaly in a week or so I'll be back to you guys with a final decision. I really want this to work for everyone, so don't be shy - tell me what you think!

I like the idea of categories. I would also add workout playlitst and motivatioal tips. I also don't mind tags.

If you want, you can email me at seeking_solace@adelphia.net

I guess I don't understand where posts like your last one or Ragey's "Clean plate" one would go. It's just general discussion about obstacles to overcome. Will that end up going under stress?

Solace: yes, those are excellent suggestions.

Rented: They could go under "obstacles"? Or "making a change"?

I was worried about this too. Maybe every post doesn't have to have a tag? They'll automatically get added to each author's "category".

Thanks Prof Me! You rock for letting me do things over here to sort of get my bloggy "fix".

I like the idea of having a "personal stories" or "obstacles" category. The personal stories seems more redundant with the author specific category, but the "obstacles" implies that people are discussin barriers to getting healthy.

I'm sure some won't fit neatly into a category. I think I'd let the author decide where to file their posts. If there was a major omisison I'd be inclined to email the author and ask their permission to file the post in a category other than those they specified at the time of posting.

Let me know how to tag and I would be willing to tag. By the way, why is the template all white? I can't see the heading.

Wow - someone's got some extra energy! Tags for categories and authors sound great, betty, and I'd be willing to tag as long as I can figure out how to do so. I can't even figure out how to post here yet - what am I missing?!?

Tags and categories sound good are fine by me. I think it would be a great way to easily find various types of posts. Let me know what I need to do help the process.

Obviously my brain and my typing where not in sync with my comment. Hopefully ya'll get what I mean. :) LOL!

I like the idea of tags, and I would definitely be willing to do it.

I know you don't want too many tags, but I was thinking of one for those of us who want to report our daily exercise, like BrightStar and others have done. Something along the lines of progress reports, accountability, checking in...etc.
