Progress Report!
I noticed some activity over here and realized that I hadn't posted since I had just started trying to get myself into better shape. Since mid-January, I have lost 14.5 pounds and have 25.5 pounds left to go. I am having some trouble with motivation, because I really to eat. And cook. And bake. I have gone over my weekly allowances several times, but my calorie intake seems to be low enough that I am gradually creeping down the scale. I have been keeping up with exercise pretty well, although don't have too many weeks that I am riding the exercise bike six days (four or five is the usual pattern). It is particularly hard right now, because our semester is coming to an end and I'm stressed, there is lots of grading to do and student presentations to attend, etc, so it's been difficult to eat the way I should. I'm not going crazy, but I find myself making excuses about why I can eat this or that. I'm hoping I can get on track once grades are in, but summer has never been a great time for me either, since we tend to eat out more. We'll see how it goes! I don't know if I'll be able to reach my goal weight by my birthday (just over four months from now), but hopefully I can get close!

Congrats on your progress! 14.5 pounds is a huge accomplishment!!!
Four or five days a week for exercise is very good. You need to give your body a day or two of rest to recover.
As far as the cooking and baking, remember that moderation is the key. Don't deny yourself, just enjoy a little.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! Sometimes I feel great that my clothes fit or feel loose, but then I know I have a long way to go!

I agree with Seeking -- it is all about moderation & not denying yourself. If you fall into that strict pattern, you're less likely to succeed longterm because it's unrealistic to expect to maintain that strictness.
