2008 Challenge--August

Drink eight glasses of water a day has been the advice for weight loss and overall fitness.

But, is it true? I mean, does a person have to drink that much water every single day????

The truth is that The amount of water we need to drink each day can vary.. some factors include:

  • Increased physical activity
  • Hot and humid weather
  • Dry indoor air and high altitudes, which reduce moisture in the air

One way to know if you are drinking enough water is to your urine is clear and odourless (not including your first urination of the morning).

OK, so that makes sense. But, can water help one lose weight and if so how much should I drink?

It is true that water can aid in weight loss. Often, hunger is merely thirst in disguise. So, consider drinking a glass of water before reaching for those chips!

Also, drinking water at a meal can fill you up, thus avoiding the "Oh, I should have eaten all of that." feeling.

Finally, if you are exercising, you need water to rehydrate your body. Sip on some water after a workout.

And don't forget, you can satisfy your water intake from food as well. Clear broths, veggies and fruits including, you guessed it, watermelon, are all great sources of water.

So, your challenge for August is to take a look at how much water you drink each day. Are you getting enough?

This is a great challenge, especially for August when we all need to be more aware of how much water we are taking in/sweating out.

For me, I think 8 glasses a day is too much. If I drink that much I feel water logged. I get in around 6 most days.

There's a big debate as to whether we should bother with 8 glasses anyway since so much of that isn't absorbed. If you're working outside all day in the hot weather you better be drinking a ton, but it takes a lot to make your urine as clear as Seeking is talking about. In fact the only time mine was that clear when I was on my "diet" of ice cubes, water, pain medicine and jello.
