Revelations.....and a question

I did something huge today. I quit the gym.

I know! Crazy right?! Here's my thinking: The whole eating healthy/getting active thing is supposed to be a permanent lifestyle change. I have spent years of my life forcing myself to go to the gym, hating every minute of it and battling the cycling of going for awhile and then not going for awhile and it has always had a negative impact on my weight loss mentality and goals, so I'm trying something new. I'm going to make other changes in my life, such as walking (hopefully working up to jogging) and using weights/resistance bands and work out DVDs at home. Those are things I find enjoyable, or at the very least, tolerable and are changes I know I can stick with. I can always join the gym again if I want or purchase additional equipment for home, but for now I feel good about my new plan and will let you all know how it goes!

Now on to my question: What do you eat for breakfast?

I usually grab a Luna Bar on my way out the door and have that and coffee at my desk, but I don't know if it's enough calories to start the day with (180) and would love to know what you guys have in the morning. My problem with breakfast has always been that no matter what I eat, cereal, pop tarts, bagels or grab and go bars, I'm always hungry a few hours later. What fills you guys up in the morning?

Well, I've found that my body responds better to the inverted pyramid model of sizable breakfast, moderate lunch, small dinner. As a vegan, I seem to do best with a protein jolt in the morning, so it's usually some kinds of beans or tofu, plus grain (brown rice, corn tortillas, etc).

Also, I'd submit that it is not necessary that your breakfast "hold you" for the whole morning. Eat a slightly small breakfast (to me, a Luna bar and coffee don't seem terribly well-balanced, but the calorie intake is about right), and just *assume* that you will need some kind of nosh around mid-morning: a banana, low-fat yogurt, handful of nuts, etc.

That "six-small-meals-a-day" method (breakfast - mid-morning snack - lunch - mid-afternoon snack - light supper) can work really well, because it means that at any given time, you only need to ingest enough to carry you for between 2 and 3 hours. This also helps with portion control.

On a good day I'll eat one bowl of cereal (grape nuts is filling but expensive) and a cup of coffee. Then in a few hours I have a small snack in between teaching.

I've read you're supposed to have 400 cal for breakfast, but if I eat more for breakfast (bad days, usually during depression stints)i feel yucky all day. In the end, just do what works for you. CJS's 6 small meals has been suggested to me many times but doesn't work for me personally. my mom does something like that though and it works for her.

Typically a cup of Go Lean cereal with 1/2 cup skim milk and coffee. Breakfast doesn't hold me and I've never been good about the 6-meal a day plan. Probably I'm more like Rented Life - bigger earlier in the day and lighter as the day goes on, but that has never fit well with my family's style.

I eat oatmeal with fat-free milk, and drink a cup of coffee right after. That is between 7:30 and 8 am. I'll then have some fat-free yogurt or grapes/strawberry (some sort of fruit) between 9:30 and 10 am.

When I first started going to the gym in the morning, I'd get really hungry a couple of hours after breakfast. I started mixing high fibre cereal in with normal cereal and that keeps me full a lot longer. In case you're interested, All Bran with extra fibre is much better than the normal kind, but still not as good as Trader Joe's equivalent. Best of all are TJ's high fibre Os, which are actually tasty on their own.

I usually eat some plain non-fat yogurt with a handful of blueberries (or other fruit) and some granola. I often have a mid-morning snack--some nuts and fruit, usually.

When I have a higher protein breakfast like eggs, I do stay full longer. As long as I don't eat too much, I don't feel sluggish. But I'm usually too busy/lazy to cook eggs most morning.s

I am one of those people who must have breakfast in the morning. Otherwise, I feel like crap.

Usually, I have a waffle with some fruit on top, tofu sausage, a banana, OJ and coffee. Since I am a vegitarian, it is critical for me to get all my nutriants, vitamins etc.

I go in phases. For a while I was eating 1/2 a sesame bagel with hummus. Then I was drinking a homemade fruit smoothie (blueberries, strawberries, soy milk, flax meal, little agave nectar). I'll sometimes eat a bowl of cereal. Whatever I eat, I also have a cup of decaf coffee (I've been off caffeine for 2-3 years now). I was really surprised how the smoothie filled me up- it didn't seem like it would be filling enough. We stocked up on bagels yesterday, so I'll probably be back to my bagel and hummus breakfast for a while.
