I've been eating well, working out plenty and now boom. I'm pregnant. This is going to be the most challenging fitness/healthy diet adventure of my life (among the other more important challenges or finishing the dissertation and possibly starting a new job in a few weeks.) When it rains it pours.
I would really appreciate advice on healthy habits in pregnancy and managing stress through healthy eating and exercise.
I am terrified.

Congratulations!
How exciting! Try not to freak out too much and remember that there are a TON of parenting blogs. I'm sure my parents didn't have such an entertaining and informative parenting resource. I'm sure our fellow academics here have some good ideas. I too am quite afraid of what (future) pregnancy will do to my body if I'm already out of shape!
Yay! A baby! That's so exciting. I agree with Prof Me. While I haven't had a baby myself, EVERYONE I know has and all of them did very well when pregnant. Suddenly it's more than just what you want - everything is about what's good for the baby. I bet you'll do fine. A lot of my friends swam for exercise - do you have access to a pool? Keep us posted on how you feel.
Congratulations! That is very exciting! I would highly recommend swimming as a good pregancy exercise. I swam up to the day before I gave birth and avoided a lot of pregancy problems (no swollen feet, almost no back pain, etc.) Even if you aren't a great swimmer, you can just paddle back and forth with a kick board. Toward the end, it was wonderful to feel weightless by being the water!
Congratulations again!
Congratulations! That is lovely news.
Information will help keep the terror at bay. I had to rely on books and magazines, but I'm sure you will be able to find everything you need to know online.
I was never more healthy in my life than I was pregnant, either. And it wasn't just the prenatal vitamins. The way I knew I was pregnant for the second time was because I had started craving salads - which I had never eaten before my first pregnancy.
Of course, I had sweet cravings, too. But a lot of them gave me heartburn, so they were often a little easier to resist - you know, behavior modification.
So, maybe our bodies sometimes help us a little with our diets during pregnancy.
Anyway, cut yourself some slack during this time. You know you will be gaining a lot of weight. But there are exercises you can do now that will help you a lot in getting fit afterwards. Swimming, as was mentioned before, is especially wonderful when you're pregnant. Another is the type of yoga classes specifically for pregnant women. I'm sure it will not be hard to find info online about other exercises, as well.
Wishing you the very best of luck.
Cheers to you! I used to work for an attorney who exercised throughout her entire pregnancy. Toward the end, she found swimming to be very helpful and soothing.
Please keep everyone posted!
I watched two different things happen with two very different people: one friend ate everything and anything b/c "it didn't matter, I'm pregnant" And ended up putting on so much excess weight that she still looks quite large today and her son is 2.
Another friend got all kinds of info she could about how much weight she should typically gain each tri-mester. She ate a lot of small meals (which you should be doing anyways) and a lot of fruits and veggies. She went right back to pre-baby weight fairly quickly b/c she didn't overeat or make excuses.
Also, I hear there are great yoga and pilates excercises for pregnant women--look it up.
