side benefit

I was reminded yesterday of one more reason to engage in some healthy activity every day: it helps me think. I donned the tennis shoes and went for a pretty good walk, mostly because I'd been sitting most of the day and needed to move my numb butt. Evidently, some blood got to my brain because I got back to the house with an idea for a research project. I spent an hour or two jotting down what I'd come up with and then, today, I spent a good part of my afternoon writing it up so I could apply for a little grant that would give me an assistant for a few hours a week. Even if I don't get the assistant, I think I have a pretty good idea that could get me started on my first research as a professor.

All because I went for a walk.

Yes! That is one of my favorite things about walking. My brain seems to go all sorts of amazing places that it just won't when it's confined indoors. It must be something about the combination of fresh air and the kind of exercise that allows your mind to roam free.

Me, too! I often leave the house thinking about a particular issue and sort of mull it over during the walk. It can definitely help you think things through without other distractions.
