I know everyone is looking to use this blog in a slightly different way. One of the ways I hope to use it is as a place to publicly set little goals and be held accountable. So here it goes:
Last week's goal: cut soda. Verdict: failed.
In all fairness, I made it until Friday without soda. I was doing just fine with sparkling water. Then, we started a major remodel within the house... 24+ hours of manual labor + 8 hours of regular work in a 60 hour time frame made for one tired girl. And a girl who drank about 72 ounces of Dr. Pepper. The good news... if soreness is any indication, I got about 3 days of good workouts in while working around the house. Seriously, the scale says I'm down about 2 lbs for the week.
This week's goals:
(1) Really cut the soda. (Ok, maybe I should be more realistic... I'll allow only one can per day when I'm spending more than 6 hours doing manual labor on the house this weekend.)
(2)Make it to the grocery store for healthy snacks at work. Any ideas for easy healthy snacks?

Hi there: One healthy snack I like to eat at work is baby carrots dipped in store-bought hummus. They're very tasty! Also- are you giving up all soda or just non-diet soda? One thing that I think is good, is to mix fruit juice with sparkling water. It tastes sweet (from from the juice) plus has the carbonation that you crave.
Do you have a fridge at work? I eat as much fruit as I can, because there aren't too many vegetables that I like. Especially during summer I love watermelon and grapes. I like canteloupe and honeydew melons, as well. Yogurt is good, too. And, throughout the year, I've been trying to eat one apple and one navel orange every day. You don't even need a fridge for those or for bananas. I find those last three really filling. Also, low fat peanut butter on lite bread is not too bad.
What I have a hard time finding is a healthy snack for when I'm craving something salty.
Good luck!
Rebecca
I can imagine that cutting out Coke (and not wanting Diet Coke instead) would be hard, but is the taste difference between Dr. Pepper and Diet Dr. Pepper that drastic? Or, could you at least manage Diet Dr. Pepper instead?
Maybe you should take on a diet soda that you have no previous experience with, so that you can't compare it to the sugar version.
Getting rid of pop is hard. (Cna you tell what part of the country I am from?) Maybe you should start out slowly, like limiting your intake.
I love cut veggies. Fruit is also good. I like to dip it in light whipped topping.
Good luck with your goals for this week. Cutting something out, cold turkey, is hard. I think it is wise of you to set a realistic goal as you did this week. :)
I bring at least 3-4 differnt fruits with me each day (apple, grapes, watermelon, plum, pineapple). They help me get through those times when I want something to munch on. I also pack those 100 calorie snacks for when I need chocolate or something sweet.
Diet Coke with line is quite tasty!
Well, don't forget that Twizzler's licorice is really low in fat (um, is there any?) and low in calories. I find it satisfying for the times I just can't nibble another carrot or eat a peach. Fruit and vegetables-good; licorice-not bad.
Twizzlers are fat free. My husband slowly cut down on his pop intake--only a glass or two, or he'd have on glass pop, one water. Now he's only drinking diet. I refuse to drink diet, I hate the taste, but once I cut down on pop I have found that I don't really crave it anymore. It took a few tries though. I suggest Siera Mist, b/c it tastes lighter and then switching from that to water isn't so bad.
Snacks: raisens, or low fat/low butter popcorn (Orvilles has one that 94% fat free and comes in "singles" packages) Makes me feel like I'm eating more.
I am most impressed with how you opened up about the struggle you faced. I think if this is a group where people admit what's hard, too, then that's the kind of group I want to be in. Making life changes is hard. I think taking small steps (cutting down gradually is more realistic -- one a day is not bad at all! especially with the kind of exercise you're getting! and more sleep always helps -- less sleep is inversely correlated with higher weight, right? Anyhow, you're awesome for opening up about what you struggled with... I'll have to be better about doing that.
awwww, thanks, DRD!
I agree, there is strength knowing that control is an illusion, we are all imperfect, and we share similar struggles.
Also, I like soda, too. :) I don't hate diet stuff, though. My drinking caloric struggle is more when it comes to alcohol. :(
