2008 Challenge--October

If you do one challenge this year, I strongly encourage you to do this one. It is easy and can help everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.

Take care of your breasts.

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So, it's an appropriate time to encourage all of you to take care your body And for the guys out there who may be reading and lurking, don't be afraid to talk to that special lady in your life about the importance of good breast health. Also, guys are not immune from breast cancer so make sure you fellas know the warning signs.

So, here is what I am asking you to do:

  1. Regardless of your age, perform a monthly breast exam. Coupled with annual exams by your doctor, this is your best defense in finding cancer early. If you don't know how to perform an exam, you can find out how here.
  2. If you are the appropriate age or if your doctor feels it's necessary, get a mammogram.
  3. Be aware of your risk factors. There are those risks that we can all control. But there are some we can't. In either case, knowing your risks will allow you to do what is necessary to stay healthy for as long as possible.
  4. Regardless of your risk level, there are many things we can do to lower the risk.
  5. Think about giving back. Sure, donating money or buying pink products is great, but how about using your newly found fit self to do some good? Consider participating in the Walk for Breast Cancer, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society or the Breast Cancer 3-Day. How about training for the next Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. If these events have already occurred in your neck of the woods, think about training for the next event. What a great way to kick start your own fitness goals by doing something great for others.

This is a challenge that you should not ignore! Take care of your body. It's the only one you have!

Attn MEN: YOU CAN GET BREAST CANCER TOO. The rates of occurrence are lower but it still can happen.
