Pre-Workout Snacks

Even though 5:30 feels too early to eat, I know I have to have a little something before I head to boot camp. I want to be able to challenge myself without getting light headed, so, food it is.

The past two mornings I've had apple w/ peanut butter, but I'm looking for some other options. Here are a few ideas I gathered from a variety of online sources:

  • A small bowl of cereal with some blueberries

  • 1 bagel with non-hydrogenate peanut butter

  • 1/2 apple with peanut butter

  • 1/2 cup trail mix

  • An English muffin with nut butter and honey

I don't like bananas, which is often first on lists like these, and I try to avoid dairy before working out (I've dealt w/ exercised-induced asthma in the past and I find that keeping dairy to a minimum really helps w/ that), so I've left off yogurt options as well even though it's a common suggestion.

I've seen some more unconventional suggestions, too, like:

  • Six ounces applesauce poured over three three-inch squares of cornbread and topped with two Tbsp raisins

  • One cup cooked pasta tossed with 1/2 cup dried cranberries and two tablespoons honey

Not only are those weird combos, but they're both far too much food for me given the time I have between eating and exercising and they require far too much prep time.

Any favorite snacks you eat before workouts?

Not specific to pre-workout, but here's a thought re/ coping with bananas: try a green-tea-based smoothie, if you have a blender:

cup of ice;

cup to cup-and-a-half of green tea (I'm addicted, I admit, to Arizona Green Tea with ginseng and honey);

any kind of fruit: ripe peach, ripe (or overripe) banana (this'll conceal the flavor); avoid citrus unless you're a "with pulp" person;

good squeeze of lemon;

powdered ginger.

Blend 'til smooth.

Contains no dairy; the lemon, ginger, caffeine, and ginseng provide a good wakeup jolt; gets a couple of minimum-daily fruits & vegetables into you; provides a shot of quick-burning sugars for workout energy.
