Another Bonus

Another bonus with 30 minutes of exercise a day is the opportunitites for reading. I have rewarded myself with two magazine subscriptions that are solely for my cardio time at the gym! I have also created a stack of all the novels that I had wanted to read (but never found time) and have started reading them one by one while I am on the bike or elliptical machine.

With respect:

I love reading on the elliptical too--but stopped doing it when a trainer friend said that, in his observation, most people who read on the machine wind up not getting full benefit of the workout. His opinion was that iPod listening and TV-watching took a lot less concentration--hence permitting sufficient concentration on the workout. Reading was *too* involving, and therefore distracted from the workout.

VMMV.

Very smart of you RL Friend. That should serve as a great motivator for you.

CJS - I totally understand what you are saying and can see the logic in what the trainer has said. I do believe, however, that doing the elliptical while reading is better than not doing anything at all. I have also found that individuals who are reading may not get their heart rate up to a high level, but the individual may go for a longer period of time on the machine due to reading. I would say that is better than nothing.

Cheers for rewarding yourself. And I agree with Ragey in that doing something is better than nothing.

It's funny, I thought that I might not work out as hard (like the trainer said) but have found that I only burn 10-30 calories less when reading. I guess I get so into what I am doing that I don't compulsively stare at the "numbers" on the screen.
