Welcome!

We read. We write. We sit in libraries or at our desks. We teach. We think. We blog.

This is not exactly the kind of lifestyle that whittles the waist, strengthens the muscles, or reduces spread, but it's the lifestyle we've chosen to adopt because (for the most part) we love what we do. How can we contribute to the world of academia without sacrificing personal health or body image? How can we effectively fight stress in a world that is filled with research and teaching demands, service requirements, and conference attendance? How can we manage to eat balanced meals when thinking about food is the last thing on the mental agenda? How can we find time to exercise -- and find exercise we enjoy -- when we barely scrape together enough time to write another article or grade another exam?

This blog is for and by academics who know the rigors of academic life and who want to achieve a balance between brain and body workouts. Comments from the fit and unfit, the Ph.Ds and the ABDs, the young and the old are most welcome here. What works for you? What are the sources of academic stress, and what are ways to combat them? What do you eat? When can you exercise? It is our hope that you'll get some answers, inspiration and perspective in these pages.

I'm in the category of the "unfit" right now! I'm hoping to change that, though. Thanks for putting this together, Prof Me!

What a delightful way to start this little blog! As a self-identified unfit academic, I'm looking forward to joining in on this discussion. I'll do my best to be positive here and save the grumbles for my blog. :)
